NodOn develops its Matter over Thread products

NodOn développe ses produits Matter over Thread

NodOn is working on Matter for 2 years and has chosen to develop its Matter products with the Matter over Thread structure.

Matter debuts around Wifi and Thread

In its first version, Matter will mainly be built around the Wifi and Thread protocols . These are two complementary protocols that can coexist in the same Smart Home network. Each of these protocols has its own attributes: Thread will consume little energy so it is the ideal protocol for all battery-powered products (sensors, remote controls), while Wifi is more energy-hungry but has more bandwidth, which makes it interesting for products that need video, such as cameras.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) included in Matter

In addition to Thread or WIFI, Matter also includes Bluetooth Low Energy in its stack . BLE is not an IP protocol but it is found in Matter; it is used to commission a new product (add a new product to the network). Once the product is included in the network, the product no longer uses BLE to communicate with other products on the network but will communicate in Thread and WIFI depending on the type of product.

Matter over Thread architecture

NodOn favors the Thread protocol . It is based on IPv6, which is an IP protocol that makes it compatible with Matter.
Thread is a very interesting protocol because it is energy efficient, like Wifi. In addition to being secure, it works on a mesh network, which allows to extend its coverage and the overall range of objects present in the network. The only weak point is that this protocol does not have an application layer (two devices cannot communicate directly with each other).
Matter will act as an application layer on top of Thread. The Thread protocol is ideal for NodOn applications that consume little energy and transmit little data (control of lighting, roller shutters, etc.).
