The standard to unify IoT
Matter (formerly Project Connected Home Over IP – CHIP) was born within the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly the Zigbee Alliance). It now brings together the biggest names in IoT (Amazon, Apple, Legrand, Google, IKEA, Schneider Electric, Samsung, Signify, etc.).
Matter’s vocation? to be THE standardized and certified protocol that makes all connected objects in the home compatible.
But not only that! Matter is also dedicated to the tertiary sector, for connected buildings.
How does Matter work?
Matter is IP-based and acts as an application layer enabling compatibility between products using WiFi, Bluetooth or Thread . Configuration of a Matter product is done via Bluetooth.
The benefits of Matter
This project has a dual purpose:
- Simplify everyday uses by making connected objects from different brands compatible
- Simplifying the development of these products. Matter is designed as a solution to be adopted by manufacturers and the market.
For users, it is the assurance of being able to configure and use their CHIP products simply. It is also the opportunity to grow their ecosystem, since Matter products are all compatible with each other.
For developers, it's a single SKU. This is a huge saving in time and money, allowing for more innovation related to the product itself.
Finally, for distributors, Matter is the assurance of simplifying the purchasing experience thanks to a simple configuration. Fewer product returns, fewer technical explanations due to the direct compatibility of different brands.
NodOn, on the way to Matter!
Since our arrival within the Connectivity Standards Alliance, we have followed the Matter working groups. NodOn actively participates in its construction and democratization in Europe and more particularly in France. We are among the first French manufacturers , alongside Somfy and Legrand, to study this technology closely. We are working on a prototype that will be available at the end of 2021, with the aim of adding this technology to our catalog and offering it to our OEM/ODM customers .
