Low-power mesh wireless protocol
Thread is a low-power mesh wireless protocol, based on the universal Internet Protocol (IP). It operates on the IEEE 802.15.4 radio standard, with very low power consumption and low latency. It is part of the open and recognized standards, such as Bluetooth or EnOcean.
This radio protocol enables seamless communication between products, which communicate with each other or with the cloud, to connect hundreds (or thousands) of products in a reliable and secure manner.
Thread networks are simple to set up and use. They have no single point of failure and can reconfigure themselves whenever a product is added or removed from the network.
The advantage of Thread: being IP-based
From our internet router, to our smartphone or all the connections across the world, the Internet Protocol (IP) is the protocol that allows products to communicate together today, regardless of their technology.
Thread enables low-power wireless products to connect to IP. Connections between connected home and building products are increasing, connecting to smartphones, tablets and computers that control the Thread network. Thread products do not require proprietary hubs to connect to other products with which they are interoperable. The benefit: reduced infrastructure and capital requirements, fewer potential points of failure and maintenance.
You don’t need to have Thread in your smartphone to connect to your products, because both devices use the same IP network. This makes it easy to connect products to personal devices such as smartphones or tablets. Products from other technologies can interact with Thread products through a hub or home automation center.

Thread addresses the challenge of interoperability in IoT
Thread, combined with other IoT-dedicated IP networks, can communicate with different clouds while simultaneously operating with other application layers like Dotdot, LWM2M, OCF, or Weave.
Thread does not require any additional hardware or software, saving developers time and money, and offering users a low-power solution at a controlled cost. Many use cases, many products and many clouds… all with a single network, and without a hub!
