Matter, the new standard for the connected home

Matter, le nouveau standard de la maison connectée

If you follow the world of connected objects, and more particularly that of the connected home, closely or from afar, you cannot have missed the new Matter radio protocol.

If not; you may have heard of CHIP or Connected Home over IP. Matter is simply the new name for CHIP.

The acronym CHIP sums up the concept of this new protocol rather well; it is based on IP protocols such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread.

Matter to address the issue of interoperability

Matter is a new protocol whose initial goal is to respond to a major problem in the world of the connected home: interoperability . Indeed, Matter's first aim is to be the universal protocol that will interconnect the entire home. Matter was born from the association of the big names in Silicon Valley dominating the voice assistant market: Amazon, Apple and Google who joined forces to propose a common protocol on which their ecosystems will communicate. Matter does not depend solely on the 3 American giants since it is more than 220 different companies participating in the development including sector leaders in France such as Somfy, Schneider Electric and Legrand.

A first version planned for 2022!

In its first version, Matter will rely mainly on Wi-Fi and Thread protocols as well as Bluetooth Low Energy to facilitate installation and commissioning. Matter's promise is to offer a reliable and secure protocol while remaining simple and providing complete interoperability between products.

Here are the main features of Matter are the values that we defend at NodOn:

  • Interoperable products that can work with any ecosystem,
  • Ease of operation, both in use and installation,
  • Reliable products with sustainable and responsive local connectivity without depending on network quality,
  • A secure solution across the entire network and accessible to users.

NodOn develops its Matter products

Interoperability, simplicity, reliability and security are core values that we defend at NodOn. It is therefore natural that we joined the Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA) to participate in the launch of Matter. Today, we are developing our first compatible products.
